Northern Thailand has 3 distinctive different climate periods.
The weather in Northern Thailand is divided into 3 distinct seasons.
For the cool season (November to February) you will need to bring warmer clothes as it can get quite cold during the nights and early mornings. It’s always recommended to have a rain jacket or poncho with you in Thailand regardless of the time of year.
Months of November to February
This is the best period to travel and visit. The weather during this time of the year is generally dry and pleasant. Temperature wise this is the coolest time of the year but has temperatures ranging from 15 degrees Celsius at night and as high as 30 degrees Celsius in the afternoons. Rainfall is minimal. A warm jacket and long pants are strongly recommended for this time of year as it can get quite chilly at higher altitudes outside of Chiang Mai. This is the high season in Northern Thailand, and the most visited period of the year.
Months of March to June
This time of year tends to be very dry with higher temperatures. The summer here is characterized by brief, daily rain showers that cool down the afternoons and help turn the landscape back to a lush, verdant green. This is the tourist low season but is still an excellent time to experience all that Northern Thailand has to offer. The average temperatures are lows around 23 degrees Celsius and highs around 33 degrees Celsius.
Unfortunately it is also the "burning season" and there are frequent forest fires, making the sky very hazy and sometimes not healthy to practice activities. It is always a risk, especially for sensitive persons. Some years there is more rain and burning are cleaned out by the rain, and some years, it can be pretty bad, with pollution rates exceeding the medical organizations guidelines.
We usually propose trips close to lakes and rivers, where there is an opportunity to refresh, if possible.
Months of August to October
August through October is the rainy season and though it can be very wet at this time there are rarely any periods where it rains for several days straight. Often it will rain overnight and into the morning but clear up in the afternoons. It can be impossible to get to the more remote villages and rafting may be restricted due to the river levels being too high. Don’t let a little rain stop you! The sights will be less crowded and the accommodations less expensive. Grab a raincoat and go for it! The temperatures are cooler and lows average around 23 degrees Celsius with the highs around 31 degrees Celsius. Best months are July and August, when the nature is at its best, offering a crisp tropical sky and lush jungle.
