AT A GLANCE
Departing from Chiang Mai, capital city of Northern Thailand, accompanied by your experienced English speaking trekking guide who will lead you through this adventurous jungle trek. Hike on seldom used jungle trails, through enchanting mountain landscapes, and learn about the mountain dwellers as Shan and Lahu people. Walk through tea and coffee plantations, jungle trails, mountain ridges, forestry tracks and eventually get the chance to taste local coffee overlooking the jungle. Spend two nights in rustic mountain lodges, at a 1000 meters altitude.
Finally relax at a small waterfall, before reaching the Mae Taeng river valley where you’ll have lunch at a riverside restaurant, and perhaps during the hot season, get the opportunity to swim or wade in the river.

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
Trip Outline
DAY 1: Mountain trek and overnight at home-stay
08h30 Meeting at your hotel in Chiang Mai. Drive north with a stop at a local market where your guide can explain about ingredients he will use for cooking. Our next destination is a peaceful valley further north and the start of the trek. After a short briefing, we’ll set off for an hour’s trek until we make a lunch stop at a fruit orchard. We continue our hike gaining altitude and a noticeable change of flora. After a bamboo forest section, we encounter a large tea plantation under the shadow of tall mature trees. The last part of the trail eventually leads to the local home-stay where we spend the night. Your guides will cook dinner for tonight and perhaps relax over a campfire. Today’s hiking is approximately 5 to 6 hours, mostly ascending.
[Meals: lunch and dinner]
DAY 2: Trekking - the longest trekking day
Morning breakfast with locally grown tea or coffee from the plantations. Today you are ready for a challenging day through a variety of jungle and crisscrossing trails. We follow the mountain ridges under jungle canopy, with occasional clearings offering panoramic views of the lower valley. A pack lunch will be taken along the trail. The afternoon will bring more bamboo forest, shade of large trees and the crossing of a refreshing stream. Our last climb will lead us to our overnight destination, a tiny Lahu village. Basic accommodation in a simple mountain dormitory lodge, overlooking the valley. Dinner prepared by your guides.
Today's hiking is over 6 hours with a mix of descents and ascents.
[Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner]
DAY 3: Morning trek, waterfall and drive back to Chiang Mai
Morning breakfast on the mountain before we start our hike. Today the hike is only a three hour’s descent to the Maetang river valley below, stopping at a refreshing waterfall. Next is a Thai lunch at a local riverside restaurant. Time to relax or splash on the river bank, observing the local life. Afterward, we drive back to Chiang Mai city, and drop off participants at their hotel. Today’s hiking is approximately 3 hours, mostly descending.

Yes, we provide sleeping bags and/or blankets, along with small pillows, for your comfort during your stay. You'll be sleeping under mosquito nets to ensure a good night's rest. Our accommodations are rustic, but we believe it's a unique experience that's worth the simplicity. Note that bathrooms are located outside the main house, and hot water is available only at our first accommodation. On the second night, you'll need to make do without hot water. Please bring your own towel (quick dry synthetic fabric recommended).
Yes, during the cold season (November to end of February) nights can get chilly in altitude. Bring a fleece and some long pants for the night. A full packing list and update season information will be sent to you after your trip registration.
Snake Encounter: Although rare, snakes have been spotted on our treks in the past. Don't worry - your guide is trained to identify and handle any potential encounters, keeping you safe.
Trekking Poles: Feel free to bring your own or we can provide them for you. Just ask your guide on the first day and we'll get you set up with a locally made bamboo trekking pole.
Noisy? yes, it is definitely noisy in the Lahu village (the second night). The first night is more remote and secluded, so it's usually quiet. If you are sensitive, we recommend you to bring some ear plugs (useful for your entire trip, as noise is often omnipresent throughout the country).
